CHAPTER EIGHT

KING

So much for a day out on the water doing surveillance. Ace was going to hand me my ass for bringing a civilian out with me on the job.

Suddenly, Joker’s earlier message about missing local fisherman and rumours of boats not coming back got a whole lot more real.

“Is there a reason we’re not turning around and running like hell?” Chrissy asked, fear lacing her voice.

I squeezed her shoulder harder. The truth was that a rather enormous part of me did want to turn around and run like hell. This wasn’t the place for her to be, and if she got hurt because of my risks and stupidity, it would kill me.

Not even a single day with her and I was already attached to the girl at my side. And in my line of work, that couldn’t be allowed to happen.

“If I turn around now, I could lose them. They aren’t going to stay in one spot and wait for me to come back with my friends, honey.”

And if we ran too efficiently, then they would give chase and without my firearms to protect us, and it would be game over.

Chrissy nibbled her lip and nodded, though I doubted my bullshit excuse convinced her.

The jetskis split to circle either side of us, surrounding us in a every tightening ring of sea spray and intimidation.

I slapped a goofy grin on my face, leaning back to lightly brush my fingers over Chrissy’s breast. She froze and made me look like a wealthy white boy chump.

Perfect.

“Keep that up and we’re good,” I murmured, waving to our aggressive crowd with my free hand. I slowed the engine and left it to idle.

Chrissy pressed her knee against mine.

I gave her hand a squeeze as one rider pulled up beside us.

“Hi.” I smiled genially at the three jet skis as though they weren’t circling us like sharks, rose out of my seat with a stumble, and managed to stub my toe for real. Keeping that off my face became a new struggle. “Out for a drive with the lady. Hope we’re not crossing an international line.” I laughed too loudly, keeping the gumby look plastered on my face, and I saw the moment the man next to me bought my act.

He jerked his chin, and the two men behind us peeled away in a shower of recycled sea water.

Chrissy squawked on cue. Suppressing a grin, I filed the moment away to thank her for the response later.

“Stay back near the island. There are rips out here that will drag you under, and you’ll never get to finish your holiday.” The man stared at me, and I held his gaze, nodding like a bobblehead toy on a car dash, my cheeks aching with my fake humour.

Let me get my rifle and we will see who gets to finish their fucking holiday.

But I didn’t have the tool with me that had earned me my coveted Crossed Rifles badge, and only my smart mouth to combat the man next to me.
